The primary payload for this mission was the first Tracking and Data Relay Satellite. The satellite was deployed into an improper but stable orbit, due to a malfunction in the transfer stage. It was gradually placed into proper orbit using its propulsion system. The first space walk of the Shuttle program was successfully performed, as were various payload experiments.!

Launch was originally set for 20 January but was postponed when a hydrogen leak into the number one main engine aft compartment was discovered. Repairs were made and testing done to reach a final countdown.!
